SSAB has announced the launch of Armox 500T production at its Mobile, AL, facility. This American-made product combines Swedish origin with high standards of quality and performance. Armox 500T is produced in thickness intervals ranging from 0.25" to 1".
"Armox 500T, known for its high-hardness and superior ballistic protection, has been a trusted material for years. Now, with production in the U.S., we can better support domestic programs and provide quicker availability and shorter lead times," said a company spokesperson.
"Armox has been utilized on military and civilian platforms for years due to its superior performance, and now it will be produced here in the U.S. to better support our customers," said Per Elfgren, EVP and Head of SSAB Special Steels.
Armox 500T is a premium armor plate known for its excellent ballistic protection and toughness, making it ideal for vehicles, security doors and safe rooms. While historically used primarily in military applications, Armox 500T also serves civilian purposes, offering protection and durability for various industries, including buildings, vehicles and infrastructure projects.
The production of Armox 500T in Mobile has undergone extensive and rigorous testing within SSAB, the DEVCOM Army Research Lab (ARL) and the U.S. Army Aberdeen Test Center (ATC). Material produced in Mobile has been directly compared to plates produced in Sweden for chemistry, material properties and ballistic performance. After successful initial trials, additional trials ensured repeatability for large-scale production, meeting SSAB's high standards.
SSAB operates fully integrated mills, providing a one-stop shop for finished quench and tempered material. The production process begins at the scrap stage and continues through finished quenched and tempered plates, including blasting and priming, all at the same facility. This allows it to control quality at every step and provide a stable supply chain for clients.
