Newall's new SPB Encoder series has been specifically designed to meet the strenuous demands of the press brake industry-offering high-accuracy motion control along with durability with high resistance to shock, vibration, and contamination.
"Glass optical linear scales have traditionally been utilized in these applications," said a company spokesperson. "However, their fragility and susceptibility to contamination are not ideal for press brake systems with the significant stressors and contamination potential."
Newall's linear encoders are driven by an inductive-rather than optical-design, which allows for all of the electronics and measuring components to be sealed and protected with an IP67 environmental rating. The scales will continue to provide accurate, reliable readings even when fully submersed in water, oil or coolant, the company noted.
In this design, a 10 kHz sinusoidal current is induced through a single drive coil within the reader head that generates an electromagnetic field, which interacts with the nickel chrome precision balls contained in the scale. A set of four pickup coils detect variations in the induced field, which are processed by the electronic circuitry to generate a signal tied to position. Depending on the position of the reader head as it passes over each ball, the phase shift of this pickup signal relative to the drive signal will vary between 0° and 360°.
The encoders offer accuracy of ±10 µm with a resolution of 1 µm or 5 µm, with rugged shock and vibration tolerances. Specifically for press-brake systems, the encoders also have up to ±3 mm allowance in mounting tolerance, allowing for radial movement due to press brake deflection.
The systems are simple-to-install and include a patent pending self-aligning mounting mechanism and a TTL differential quadrature output. Various measuring lengths are available to suit individual applications. Systems are designed to allow for a maximum traverse speed of 60 m/minute, with an acceleration of 100 sq. ms (10g).
